How Lord Muruga is Worshipped

How Lord Muruga is Worshipped

Lord Murugan is worshiped in a significant and grand manner. The festival of Skandha Sashti Vritham lasts for six days, starting with the day following the new moon of Aswin and is extremely an important celebration of Lord Muruga.
Some devotees observe partial or full fast on each Sashti day and throughout the Skanda Sashti period.
Vaikasi Visakam is celebrated as the birthday of Murugan in the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May - June)
Thiru Karthikai in November - December, Thaipusam festival in January - February, and Pankuni Uttiram festival in March - April are other festivals associated with Subramanya Swamy.
In Kanda Puranam, Saint Vasistha has said that if one worships Lord Muruga on Friday and fasts on that day all his wishes gets fulfilled. By worshiping the Karthigai star on which Lord Muruga was born and observing a fast, one’s problem will be removed and will be liberated from all tensions.
Puranas says that Lord Muruga taught language Tamil to Saint Agasthiar where he sat himself as the leader for the academy of poets and the language flourished. Accordingly he is called the God of Tamil.
Kavadi
Taking ‘Kavadi’ to please Lord Muruga is also considered to be another important worship of Lord Muruga. The devotee takes a vow to live the life of an ascetic for a particular period and the travel ends to the temple of Lord Muruga by bare foot bearing the Kavadi. Devotees can carry different varieties of Kavadi like flower, milk paneer etc. But usually devotees carry a semi-circled Kavadi with decorated canopy supported by a wooden rod to the temple of Lord Muruga where special prayers are offered.
