Utthirapasupatheeswarar Temple , Thiruchenkkattangudi

Utthirapasupatheeswarar Temple
Thiruchenkkattangudi

Uttarapasupatheeswarar Temple: The old name of this place is Ganapatheeswaram. It is around 21 Kms north east of Tiruvarur and there are direct buses from both Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam. We are visiting the temple of Shri Vaitha Thirukuzhal Umai Nayaki sametha Shri Uthrapasupatheeswarar(Ganapatheeswarar/Uthirapatheeswarar). This is a Paadal petra sthalam with Thevarams by both Appar and Sambandar.

The temple is open from 6.45 am to noon and from 5 to 8 pm.

 The contact numbers are 04366 270 278/292 300 and 094431 13025.

The sthala Vruksham is Forest Fig (Kattu Athi) tree and there are several theerthams-Surya, Chandra, Sathya, Seerala, Agni, Indra, Yama, Varuna and Vayu theerthams. Sathya Theertham is in front of the temple. Mangala Vinayakar shrine is on the steps of this tank.

This is a large temple, occupying nearly 2 acres. At the entrance, we see a five tiered Rajagopuram. It is an east facing temple. Though it is a Shiva temple, prominence is for Vinayakar, similar to Pillayarpatti or Thiruvalanchuzhi. The first Neyvedhyam and aarti are offered to Ganapathi in this temple.

There are two main stories involving Ganapathi in this temple. The first one is about the main Ganapathi shrine where the Lord appears with a human head, unlike the elephant head in other temples ( Exceptions like Thilatarpanapuri are to be noted). After killing Gajamukhasura, Ganapathi came here for Dosha Nivarthi (removal of sin). Since Ganapathi prayed here to His father, it came to be called Ganapatheeswaram and the Lord, Ganapatheeswarar. During the war with Gajamukhasura, blood flowed like river and the entire land became red. Hence it came to be called Thiruchenkattangudi (Chenkaadu= red forest, land).

More famous Ganapathi in this temple is the Vatapi Ganapathi. This was the Lord in the Chalukya capital of Badami (Vatapi in the olden days) which was taken from there by the victorious Pallavan warrior Paranjothi. As he was from this place, he installed this Lord in this temple. As per the local belief, the celebrated Hamsadwani raga krithi Vatapi Ganapathim of Shri Muthuswamy Deekshitar was sung on this Lord. ( Some dispute it saying that it was sung on the Ganapathi in Tiruvarur temple).

Here there is a small digression about Paranjothi. After the war, he took retirement from his duties and became an ardent Shiva devotee. He was called Siruthondar. He was living here with his wife Thiruvenkattu Nangai, son Seeralan and maid Seerala Nangai. He was in the habit of feeding a Shiva devotee before taking his food. One day, he could not locate any Shiva devotee and went near the temple to look for them.

At that time, a Saivite monk appeared on his door steps and demanded food from Siruthondar’s wife. When he would not take food without her husband , he went near the Forest fig tree and eventually, Siruthondar located him and brought him home. The monk said that he was very fond of eating human flesh. Siruthondar, without any hesitation, cut his son , cooked the flesh and served. Before eating, the monk demanded that Siruthondar’s son also should join him in meals. The perplexed couple did not know what to do. They went outside the house and started calling “ Seerala, Seerala”. Immediately, the boy came back to life.

The bewildered couple went inside and saw Lord Shiva with Parvathi, in the place of the monk. Lord blessed all of them including the maid and gave them Moksha Praapthi. Their shrine is in front of the Lord in this temple. It is believed that Shiva came in the form of Bhairava, dressed like the mendicants in North (Uthira Desam) for this episode (thiruvilayadal). Hence He is called Uthirapasupathy or Uthirapathi. Every year, the Siruthondar story is enacted on the Bharani star of Chithirai month ( Apl-May) and a special prasadam with herbs is offered to the devotees ( Seerala Kari). Couples without children, take this prasadam to get the Lord’s blessings for children.

There are four Ambicas associated with this place. A local king prayed Lord for children. He was blessed with four daughters. When they came of age, the king prayed to Shiva to marry all the four of them. When the Lord agreed, the four Ambicas took to the four temples around here-Vaitha Thirukuzhal Nayaki here, Sarivar Kuzhali in Ramanathaswamy temple in Thirukannapuram, Karundhar Kuzhali in Thirupugalur and Vandar Kuzhali in Thirumarugal.

All these four Ambals have a common name Shoolikambal. This name is associated with their activity of helping the pregnant ladies( Shoolis) during delivery. Since they would return late after attending to the deliveries, these Ambals, including the one here, have their shrines outside the main temple. During Ardhajama Pooja ( night pooja), special neyvedhyam meant for just- delivered mothers, is offered to these Ambals- Samba rice, Jeera, salt, ghee and pepper.

There is another story in the sthala puranam. Once a king ( Aiyadigal Kadavar Kon, the Pallava King) wanted to instal a Murthy resembling the one seen by Sirthondar and his family. Despite their best efforts, the sculptors could not get a statue matching the expectation of the king. At that time, a Shiva devotee came there and asked for water. The sculptors who were already frustrated were further irritated and gave a jug containing the molten metal kept for pouring into the statue mold. When he drank it, He became the statue the sculptors were looking for. As there was some excess metal on top, the sulptors tried to chisel it out. It started bleeding and the sculptors applied a mixture of Pachakarpooram (borneol) and saffron (Kungumapoo). (The scar is seen on the head of the Lord). Then only they realised that the devotee was Shiva Himself. They pleaded for mercy. The Lord not only accepted their apology but also ordained that this mixture should be offered as Neyvedhyam in the evening pooja.

There are nine kshetrams considered as Nava Thandava Kshetrams of Shiva- Oordhvathandavam (Thiruvalangadu), Vedathandavam(Kailash), Rahasyathandavam (Thiruvengadu), Anandathandavam (Chidambaram), Kaal Maari Aadiya Thandavam (Madurai), Aadal Vallar Thandavam (Kumbakonam), Dharukavana Thandavam (Vazhuvur), Tripura Thandavam (Atikai) and Ubhayapaada Nartanam (Thiruchenkattankudi). Hence this is one of the important pilgrim centres for the Saivites.

There are two major Shiva shrines in this temple. Ganapathesswarar is in the Linga format in the main shrine. The Utsavamurthy is called Uthrapatheeswarar and He is present near the Siruthondar shrine. Uthira Pasupatheeswarar is in the idol form, holding udukkai, trident and a begging bowl (Thiruvodu). This form of the Lord comes under Bikshadanar swaroopam. The other deities are housed in Koshtam and Prakaram. Murugan is present in a separate shrine with HIs consorts. Arunagirinathar had sung a Thirupugazh on Him.

As per puranams, Shiva manifests in the form of 8 Samharamurthis (destroying the evil). In this temple, all the eight- Bhujangalinga, Gajasamhara, Oordhva Thandava, Kala Samhara, Gangala, Bikshadana, Tripura Samhara and Bhairava Murthis- are present in a line in the prakaram. This gives the devotee an opportunity to worship all the eight at the same time. In addition, twin Bhairavas are present in the prakaram. The Durga with eight hands on the koshtam of main shrine, is unusually holding a bow. The seat of Surya among the planets in the Navagraha shrine is slightly elevated.
