Spiritual uses of turmeric in Hinduism Turmeric for representing an essence of life that transcends the physical and allow for those energies to enter our life, our aura and our being in ways that go much deeper.

.Spiritual uses of turmeric in Hinduism......Throughout India there is a very sacred ritual called Arati wherever the Hindu tradition is practiced. A puja tray is waved in front of one’s chosen deity or ishta devata with great love and reverence. On the puja tray can be found a lit candle, some beautiful flowers and the three sacred and symbolic substances.

In addition to rice and vermillion, Turmeric is one of the three most sacred offerings that can be made in the process of worshipping the Divine. This is because Turmeric is known and highly respected as being the actual physical essence of the Divine Mother.

It is true that every plant under the sun has it’s own presiding spirit or deity. In the healing system of Plant Spirit Medicine any of these spirits can be ritually propitiated or invoked in order mitigate a specific physical disease, mental health condition or emotional imbalance which might be associated with a specific plant. By so honoring that plant according to certain forms of ritual worship and techniques, the malady can be ameliorated to the point of complete healing. The significance of Turmeric within the religious traditions of India and other countries throughout the Orient goes way beyond the spiritual. Within the world’s oldest healing system known as Ayurveda, Turmeric is quite valued for its many healing qualities and curative powers. Turmeric has proven effective in treating an unusually long list of common illnesses, chronic diseases, medical conditions and health complaints.

Here is a list of many of the health conditions which have responded favorably to various types of remedies which incorporate Turmeric:

Turmeric has been utilized with positive effect for these many health issues.

As you can see, the very high place that Turmeric occupies in Mother Earth’s pharmacopeia is now being recognized, even by Western health practitioners. Much recent biomedical research and many scientific studies have demonstrated the extraordinary efficacy that Turmeric has proven to have in a broad array of medical contexts.

Going beyond the physical is where real healing takes place.

On the energetic and etheric levels, when we value Turmeric for representing an essence of life that transcends the physical, we allow for those energies to enter our life, our aura, our being in ways that go much deeper. Through this more profound interaction, we permit a more permanent and deeper healing of that which truly ails us.

Just as garlic is worn around the neck of those who feel that its protective powers are capable of warding off evil spirits, various herbs and spices do possess energies which are far more powerful than the commonly known herbal healing qualities. For instance, in Ayurveda Holy Basil is known for possessing special qualities which go way beyond the basil we use for taste in our pesto recipes. Keeping a vibrant Holy Basil plant in your kitchen is considered to be an excellent way to purify the whole cooking environment.

When we approach our plants and their leaves, roots, and flowers with deep reverence as being different manifestations of the Divine, we essentially go right to the source. Therefore, when we offer sincere respect and gratitude to Turmeric, its presiding spirit is pleased and will bless us accordingly.

Many may dismiss this account of rarefied healing energies and the sublime essences associated with every plant in the Plant Kingdom. Nonetheless, their inherent powers will manifest according to our faith and reverence. Ultimately, the efficacy of any plant remedy is determined by each indiviual’s own level of faith in that remedy. The more faith one has in their prescribed medicine, whether it is a natural remedy or pharmaceutical drug, the greater the likelihood the medicine will work.

Whereas faith does serve to ‘potentize’ all medicine, and every type of medicine comes from the Mother Nature, it might behoove us as a society to acknowledge the true source of healing behind all of nature’s remedies. Having an abiding trust in the Divine Mother to heal all that ails us, is a very good place to start. Just as recognizing Her physical essence in the form of Turmeric brings us one step closer to the greatest source of healing in all of Creation.

“When it becomes human nature to nurture Mother Nature,
Mother Nature will more fully nurture Human Nature.”Turmeric is a spice that is widely used as a spice for cooking in Indian kitchen. It is one of the most basic Indian spices without which food cannot be cooked in Indian households. But turmeric is not just a culinary ingredient. Turmeric has many spiritual uses in India. These spiritual uses of turmeric extend to Hindu religious rituals. Turmeric or haldi as it is called in India also has medicinal powers, Haldi is also the name of a pre-wedding ceremony. In this ceremony (that usually happens just a day before the wedding), the bride and the groom are adorned with turmeric paste and then bathed in milk. Turmeric is associated with purity, fertility and auspicious beginnings in Hindu culture. Haldi

Here are some of spiritual uses of turmeric in Hinduism. On Wedding Cards The wedding cards of a Hindu wedding are first marked with haldi and kumkum and then distributed to the guests. This show that turmeric has many spiritual uses in a wedding ceremony. Adorns The Gods Turmeric paste is used to adorn the statues or murtis of God. For example, Lord Vishnu loves to be decorated with haldi. Three main ingredients are used for adorning the gods, haldi, chandan (sandalwood) and kum kum (vermilion) The Wedding Ceremony Just before the wedding, ubtan or turmeric paste is applied on the groom and bride. This ritual is meant to make their minds and bodies pure before the marriage ceremony. Moreover, turmeric is also a natural ingredient that lightens your skin and cures acne. So it has beauty benefits too. Tilak Indians have a custom of welcoming a person back home or bidding farewell to a person by doing aarti and tilak or tikka. This tilak is a dot or line drawn on the forehead. This is done for the protection of the person who is leaving So, when the women of the house does the tilak and say God be with you, they use haldi and kum kum. Religious Art Haldi is often used along with kum kum to draw religious figures like swastika, om etc. These religious symbols are usually drawn with either turmeric or vermilion. These are the various spiritual uses of turmeric. Do you know any other auspicious uses of turmeric?

Turmeric Health Benefits

Turmeric Health Benefits

Turmeric is an ancient root used for its healing properties for centuries. Turmeric comes from the rhizome (rootstock) of the Curcuma longa plant. To manufacture it, the roots of the plant are boiled, dried and then ground into a powder. Traditionally used in Chinese and Indian folk medicine, turmeric benefits are amazing and able to treat a wide range of illnesses. The powerful anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities of turmeric have made it a precious commodity for ages!

Referred to as “Indian saffron” in medieval England, turmeric wasn’t understood or valued for a long time. People used it as natural food dye instead of as the unbelievable healing agent it really is. The many turmeric health benefits are truly incredible!

With a peppery, warm and bitter flavor, the mild fragrance of turmeric resembles orange and ginger, which makes it a national favorite in curry dishes dating back centuries. Today, it’s widely used in yellow mustard and as a natural health supplement.

Next to essential oils, few natural remedies have reached mainstream use like turmeric has these past few years. Interestingly enough, you’d expect that Americans would catch on sooner, considering that we’ve doused our Ball Park franks in yellow mustard since 1904. That was the year R.T. French Co. first started to use turmeric as a preservative and color agent for “creamy salad mustard.”

Top 7 Proven Turmeric Health Benefits

The list of healing powers attributed to turmeric curcumin seems to go on for days. Of the 7,000 studies testing its effectiveness and safety, very few report any side effects whatsoever. Although inherent dangers exist for certain people, the vast majority of research findings center on the turmeric health benefits and its healing properties.

Some health conditions turmeric helps with are:
1. Chronic Inflammation and Pain
The journal Oncogene published the results of a study that evaluated several anti-inflammatory compounds. It found that aspirin (Bayer, etc.) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.) are least potent, while curcumin is among the most potent anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative agents in the world. (9) This means turmeric not only has great promise with chronic pain, but since it has less side effects, it may provide safe, lasting results!

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis
Due to its high anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is highly effective at helping people manage rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A recent study out of Japan evaluated its relationship with interleukin (IL)-6, the inflammatory cytokine known to be involved in the RA process, and discovered that curcumin “significantly reduced” these inflammatory markers. This suggests that regular turmeric use could be a potent strategy to prevent the onset of RA from developing to begin with!

3. Depression
Researchers from the Government Medical College (Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India) published the results of the first study this past April to evaluate curcumin’s ability to manage depression in a controlled setting. Taking 60 volunteers diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and diving the group to determine how patients treated by curcumin compared against fluoxetine (Prozac) and a combination of the two, it discovered that that the principal curcuminoid in turmeric is not only as effective as Prozac in managing depression, it doesn’t carry with it all the dangerous side effects as anti-depressive drugs do. According to the paper, “This study provides first clinical evidence that cur cumin may be used as an effective and safe modality for treatment in patients with MDD.”

4. Diabetes
Turmeric is shown to lower blood glucose levels and reverse insulin resistance. For instance, an article published in Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Communications shared a study out of Auburn University that discovered curcumin suppresses glucose production in the liver. Fascinatingly, researchers proved that it’s actually 400 times more potent than Metformin (a common diabetes drug) in activating AMPK and its downstream target acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). Turmeric acted as an anti-diabetic and antioxidant in diabetes, especially type 1 diabetes , improved metabolic function and reduced the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries of type 2 diabetes patients .

5. Cancer
Recent studies show turmeric is a powerful adversary to cancer. Curcumin shows a marked ability to inhibit cancer cell growth, boost antioxidant levels and the immune system, and kill cancer cells. It seems to work on improving mitochondrial function at a cellular level, and it improves metabolism. Even against drug-resistant strains of leukemia, curcumin caused cell death of cancer cells.

 6. Skin and Aging
Turmeric has many healing properties for skin. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory so it reduces redness or other skin irritations. It’s antibacterial, so it’s great for blemishes, acne and skin balance. Turmeric is wonderful at improving the texture of the skin because it is an exfoliant but also rich in antioxidants. It’s a wonderful natural treatment inside and out!

7. Brain Health and Memory
It’s all in your head … literally. This vital organ is the fundamental keeper of everything you’re able to think, act or dream. By taking turmeric, you can improve the oxygen intake of the brain, which helps in all of the brain’s functions and processes. Turmeric is extremely healing for the brain and for increasing memory function. Not surprisingly, when your brain functions at its best, then you increase the uptake of hormones, such as seratonin and melatonin. So, by healing the basic functioning of the brain, you can also heal other mental illnesses.

Benefits of Kasthuri Manjal (Wild Turmeric)

Benefits of Kasthuri Manjal (Wild Turmeric)

If you have even a small piece of Curcuma aromatica/ kasthuri manjal/ wild turmeric in the room, the whole room will smell very nice. Kasthuri Manjal/ Wild turmeric is very fragrant and you could have easily guessed that it is my favorite among all the turmeric varieties, as I have even named my blog wild turmeric. Each turmeric have their own uses and health benefits but when it comes to external applications, wild turmeric is the king. Wild turmeric treats a variety of skin diseases from acne, eczema to insect bites on the skin.

The main difference between kasthuri manjal from other variety of turmerics is it does not stain the skin like the regular turmeric, and is very fragrant than the normal turmeric. But we don't use this variety for cooking, we only use it for external applications. I like to buy organic dried kasthuri manjal and make my own turmeric powder at home. If you don't get them in your place, try using good quality wild turmeric powder. Dried kasthuri manjal stores well, buy it in bulk, sun dry and store it. Whenever you want to use, you can powder it a mixer preferably after sun drying it a little more. This way, it retains the freshness longer. Kasthuri manjal has strong antiseptic and anti bacterial properties, making it the best for acne treatments. But if you have sensitive skin, never use turmeric alone. Use it along with a conditioning agents like milk, yogurt, etc. If you have oily skin, you can mix it with rose water. Even pregnant women can use kasthuri manjal on their skin at least weekly once or twice mixed with yogurt and little bit of coconut oil on their skin, before bath to prevent stretch marks.

Beauty benefits:

1.Kasthuri Manjal Face Pack for Fairness/ Skin Whitening:

I haven't come across any ingredient that changes our skin color dramatically. Whenever I see an advertisement promising fair skin, I only think how misleading these advertisements are, spending billions of dollars to make us believe something that is not true. But there are natural ingredients that brighten our skin and kasthuri manjal tops that list. A simple homemade face pack made with kasthuri manjal powder and milk/ yogurt will brighten our skin considerably, if used regularly.

2. Kasthuri Manjal For Unwanted Facial Hair Removal:

Regular use of kasthuri manjal on the face as a face pack helps to retard facial hair growth. In our village, many homes have a small stone along with a small piece of turmeric in the bathroom. When women have their bath, they rub the turmeric on the stone and apply the paste on their face, this keeps the face blemish free and also removes facial hair. But this has to be done for a long time.

3. Kasthuri Manjal for Babies:

When the women gets pregnant in our place, we start preparing nalangu powder/ nalangu maavu/ bath powder. It is a powder made with kasthuri manjal and other herbs that keep the babies skin blemish free. We don't use kasthuri manjal for boy babies, we only use it for girl babies as it reduces the hair growth on their skin, if used regularly. I will post the recipe for it very soon in the blog.

4. Kasthuri Manjal for Acne & Acne Scars:

Kasthuri manjal is amazing for treating acne and acne scars. Unlike chemical filled acne creams sold in the market, kasthuri manjal acne treatment is very effective for treating acne and acne scars and does not have any side effects. A homemade face pack made with holy basil leaves and kasthuri manjal is very effective for acne and acne scars. You can fine the link for the recipe here. I have used regular fat variety of turmeric for the pack, but using kasthuri manjal is even more effective.

5. Kasthuri Manjal Bath Powder:

We make a wonderful bath powder at home with kasthuri manjal. It is made with white turmeric, kasthuri manjal/ wild turmeric, rose petals and green gram dhal. This bath powder is very fragrant, prevent skin diseases and does not strip of skin's natural oils. You can find the recipe for it here. But make sure to sun dry the bath powder ingredients well before powdering, for it to store well.

TURMERIC - Curcuma longa

TURMERIC (Curcuma longa) is a familiar and important spice in South and South East Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine. It is popularly known for its bittersweet flavour and the bright yellow colour it adds to curries. It is extracted from the rhizome, an underground horizontal stem that resembles a tuberous root

Over the last few years, turmeric also referred to as curcumin, has come to be recognized as one of the world’s healthiest superfoods. People from the East have known about the power of turmeric and have been using it for well over hundred years now. The Indians are especially known for using turmeric generously — both as spice for their food and for medicinal purposes.

Though this multi-functional plant has been around for ages, it's only until recently that modern medical experts have started to really research these roots for their medicinal power and have found the age old wisdom regarding its benefits to be true.

🍂ETYMOLOGY
The name turmeric derives from the Latin word terra merita (meritorious earth), referring to the bright yellow color of ground turmeric, which resembles a mineral pigment. It is known as terre merite in French and simply as “yellow root” in many languages. In the scientific name the genus Curcuma is derived from the Arabic “kurkum” or “kunkuma” for turmeric or its saffron-like colour. The specific epithet longa has its origin in Greek, meaning long, possibly referring to the long leaves of the plant.

🍂THE PLANT
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a perennial, rhizomatous, herbaceous flowering plant from the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. It has highly branched, yellow to orange, cylindrical, aromatic rhizomes. The long simple leaves arise from the basal rhizome and their overlapping petiole-sheaths form a pseudostem. The flowers are produced in short spike inflorescences, on top of which are present stem bracts on which no flowers occur; these bracts are white to green and sometimes tinged reddish-purple, and the upper ends are tapered. The lower bracts bear the small zygomorphic, yellow flowers with 3 petals. The flowers have one fertile stamen and produce a trilocular fruit according to Wikipedia but other sources claim that the flowers are sterile and do not produce any fruits or viable seeds. So the propagation is mainly done by the rhizome.

🍂GROWING TURMERIC
The crop is planted by setts (small rhizomes) with one or two buds. It prefers moist well drained, fertile loamy soil, but unable to withstand waterlogging. Warm climate and partial shade makes for optimum growth.

🍂PRODUCTION OF TURMERIC FROM THE RHIZOME
Before turmeric can be used, the rhizomes need to be processed. The rhizomes are boiled or steamed to remove raw odor, gelatinize the starch and produce a more uniformly colored product.

For this the rhizomes are placed in shallow pans in large iron vats containing alkaline water (e.g., solution of sodium bicarbonate). The rhizomes are then boiled for between 40–45 minutes. The rhizomes are removed from the water and dried in the sun immediately to prevent overcooking. When finger tapping of the rhizome produces a metallic sound, it is sufficiently dry. The dried rhizomes are polished to remove the rough surface. The dried rhizome is powdered to give us the turmeric powder we use in our kitchens.

The powder maintains its coloring properties indefinitely, although the flavor may diminish over time. Protecting the turmeric powder from sunlight retards the rate of deterioration.

🍂HEALTH BENEFITS

🍂NATURAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY
Studies show that curcumin may offer potent anti-inflammatory properties to help with the symptoms of conditions like arthritis, joint pain, gout, sciatica & muscle pain. It is known for reducing pain and muscle damage following physical exercise

🍂POTENT ANTIOXIDANT
Curcumin has been shown to be effective in reducing free radicals that cause damage to the body’s cells. Free radical damage, along with inflammation, are a key driver of cardiovascular disease.

🍂SKIN HEALTH, GUT HEALTH AND IMMUNITY
The antioxidant properties of curcumin also make it potentially beneficial for skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis - as well as supporting gut health and immune health. It could be used to relieve mild digestive problems, such as feelings of fullness and flatulence

🍂BRAIN HEALTH AND COGNITIVE FUNCTION
There is evidence that curcumin may help with Alzheimer’s disease and mood disorders. In recent studies it helped reduce depression and anxiety symptoms in multiple participants.

🍂CULINARY USES
Turmeric is one of the key ingredients in many Asian dishes, imparting a mustard-like, earthy aroma and pungent, slightly bitter flavor to foods. It is used mostly in savory dishes, but also is used in some sweet dishes. It is a principal ingredient in curry powders.
Turmeric milk or Turmeric latte as it is called these days is an old home remedy for soothing pain and muscle soreness post exercise or injury.

🍂OTHER USES
Turmeric makes a poor fabric dye as it is not so fast.

It is also used for making an indicator paper called curcuma paper. The paper is yellow in acidic and neutral solutions and turns brown to reddish-brown in alkaline solutions,

Manjal - Kungkumam

Manjal - Kungkumam

Turmeric is the most IMPORTANT & AUSPICIOUS substance in every Hindu function. Haldi is a commonly known name in every household. No Celebration or auspicious function begins without haldi (turmeric) or kum-kum (kungumam). One must know its full potentials and reason for giving much importance to it.

All of us are well aware that yellow color paint is generally used to for all public utilities such as signal poles, taxis, public telephone, road divider lines etc. Yellow is the prime eye catching color and it has cooling stimulation in the brain. That's why the road signals are given amber in between Red & Green as to caution one's mind.

According to Ayurveda, (a science dedicated to herbals & naturals) Haldi the Turmeric plays vital role in day to day life. It is the only ingredient used for all type of cooking agent . It is a natural skin conditioner, heals cuts, burns and wounds etc. Turmeric is used as a main and basic formula for all health & Skin care products .It is also used as main and basic substance for skins Ointments.

Each and every one of us emit brain wave and The wavelength differs from person to person. And to regularize the wave length Hindu women used to apply kungumam ( kum kum) made out of pure turmeric. Also It is very difficult to hypnotize or mesmerize a person who applies Turmeric spot regularly in one's fore head. In addition to this, the benefit of regularizing ones own brain wave length is activated for those apply it regularly.

The Sri Vaisnava Brahmins from South India applies turmeric paste in a vertical line in their fore head. It is believed that this strengthens their brain wave length and also it avoids scattering wave and sends signals in a focused manner.

As per the Hindu custom & practice each and every auspicious function begins with turmeric and I am no exception. Hence Aye do open my Web site with HALDI-KUMKUM (Manjal - Kungumam) (TURMERIC). Now let us see what the researchers have said about the Haldi aka Turmeric:
Grandma recommended GOOD OLD turmeric even can cure epilepsy, too, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have found.

They have also found it effective in boosting memory and reducing stress.

Research carried out on rats at the department of pharmacology at AIIMS has yielded positive results. "Epilepsy requires long-term anti-epileptic drug (AED) therapy, which is advised according to symptoms. However an effective prevention or cure for epilepsy hasn't been available and many drugs in use have side-effects," said Dr K. H. Reeta, assistant professor of pharmacology at AIIMS.

According to her even new classes of AEDs are not free of side- effects. Phenytoin is a commonly used AED that has been found effective against all types of seizures. But it also causes cognitive impairment (a condition in which thinking abilities are badly affected) in patients as it damages essential macromolecules of the body, including DNA.

"Toxicity is common in patients of epilepsy treated with phenytoin, and thus requires careful drug-level monitoring and supportive care," said Dr Yogendra Kumar Gupta, head, pharmacology department, AIIMS. "The goal of AED therapy is freedom from seizure without side-effects. But this hasn't been achieved. The reasons for this include misdiagnosis of the type of seizure and prescription of the wrong AED," Reeta said.

" Phytochemicals (chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants) have been shown to possess a wide range of properties that facilitate effective treatment without side- effects.

Therefore, we investigated the effects of administering turmeric to rats that suffered from phenytoin-induced cognitive impairment and oxidative stress (the process in which highly reactive molecules such as free radicals impair particular cellular functions),"

The research team found that turmeric, when administered orally with phenytoin, significantly prevented cognitive impairment and oxidative stress.

Lakadong Turmeric

Farming is a serious business and not all smooth sailing. If you are curious to know about the pre-planting activities and what goes on in the fields. You have to discover firsthand how the farmers go about their business of planting Lakadong turmeric.

Know more about which Lakadong turmeric seeds farmers use, how they care for these seeds, and how they prepare them and the soil for planting.

You can also learn more about what manure they use or whether they add fertilizers and pesticides at all. Or how long does it take for turmeric plants to mature?

Planting season is the best season to find out everything about their methods. Here’s how the farmers go about preparing to plant their Lakadong turmeric seeds.

Farmers Choosy About Lakadong Turmeric Seeds

Lakadong turmeric farmers are choosy about selecting and preserving the best seed material for their future produce. Seeds will have to be free from any kind of blemish or sign of disease and of a healthy size and look. The seed material selected goes to a special basket or container for the next season’s planting.

The harvested rhizome will have the mother rhizome which is fatter and bigger in size and finger rhizomes which are thinner and smaller. Farmers prefer to keep the mother rhizome for seed rather than the fingers. They say it develops fingers faster and gives a larger yield. A finger rhizome seed material will first develop into a mother rhizome before sprouting fingers. So, for this reason, farmers don’t sell mother rhizomes unless they aren’t quality seed material.

Prepping the Soil for Lakadong Turmeric
Month of March is the time for preparation of the soil. The temperature hovers around 14°C at the minimum and 24°C at the maximum on an average. Rainfall is around 500 mm which is necessary to soften the soil for tillage. In April there is a slight 1-2 degree rise in temperate and rainfall is around 450 mm. Apart from soil conditions, these pre-planting and planting time rainfall and temperature conditions are crucial for a good Lakadong turmeric crop.

As the months advance the temperature and humidity increases, gradually declining towards the end of the monsoon season in September/October. The overall yearly average minimum/maximum rainfall requirement is 15°/24° C and rainfall is 5100 mm. This rainfall is usually sufficient for the crop and no irrigated water is necessary.

Pre-harvest Practices for Lakadong Turmeric
Lakadong farmers have traditional pre-harvest cultivation practices. March-April showers enable them to prepare their land, clearing it of weeds, bushes and other vegetation. They plough and beat the soil to a fine tilth, usually with a handheld hoe (mohkhiew) or tractor, if they can afford it.
April is the ideal month to plant because the next few months will see the monsoon rains that provide the much-needed water for the young plants. The farmers make ridges and furrows to place the seed material in within rows, usually half a metre apart from each other plant to plant and row to row.

Usually, the farmers do not apply manure as the soil is well fed with nutrients from the decomposed plant material. If they use manure at all that will be fully decomposed farmyard manure such pig or cow dung, either spread the manure over the land during preparation or filling it in the seed pits at planting time.

Farmers drop in 2-3 seed rhizomes into the pits or rows and then cover with soil. Lakadong turmeric farmers are careful in avoiding the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides even if this means lower yields and attacks by pests and diseases. They are keener in preserving the heritage of their method of cultivation.
Almost all farmers plant other crops such as maize, chillies, aubergines or okra as mixed crops alongside Lakdaong turmeric. To conserve moisture farmers cover the area with mulch such as leaves or straw.

The following weeks and months aren’t easy for farmers. In less than a month’s time, weeds will start to appear, necessitating immediate weeding action. Thereafter, throughout the nine months of crop duration, they weed at periodic intervals depending upon the intensity of weed growth.

Harvest Season of Lakadong Tumeric
By the months of December/January, the stems and leaves show tell-tale signs of wilting. This drying of the aerial parts indicates that the crop is mature enough for harvesting. Farmers then carefully dig into the earth with hoes to lift the clusters of rhizomes, tapping them to clear off mud and earth. Each rhizome cluster usually carries 8-12 finger rhizomes.

Black turmeric

kali haldi
The rhizome of kali haldi has a bitter, sharp, hot taste, and a pleasant odour. It has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, and is laxative. It is used as a tonic for the brain and the heart. Rhizomes are useful in treating leucoderma, piles, bronchitis, asthma, tumors, and tuberculous glands of the neck, enlargement of the spleen, epileptic seizures, inflammations, and allergic eruptions.

Black turmeric is native to Northeastern and Central India where it has been part of cultural ceremonies and medicinal remedies. Black turmeric is used by many tribal communities in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra. The herb is sold fresh or dried in markets across India and Southeast Asia. As of 2016, Black turmeric has been listed as an endangered species by the Indian Agricultural Department. Efforts are being made to protect and conserve Black turmeric in Odisha, on the central eastern coast, along the Bay of Bengal.

Black turmeric is a rare herb. It is the underground portion of the stem, or rhizome, of the Cucurma caesia plant. The plant itself is sometimes grown as an ornamental, but the root has been used for centuries for medicinal and religious purposes. Black turmeric offers benefits similar to the orange variety, but the darker cultivar contains higher concentrations of curcumin than any other Curcuma species. In Hindi, the herb is called Kali Haldi. It is used widely in India for health and religious purposes.

NUTRITIONAL VALUE/ MEDICINAL USE
Black turmeric contains the highest concentrations of curcumin of any plant species. It is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. The root has been used medicinally for centuries to treat arthritis, asthma, and epilepsy. Black turmeric root is crushed and can be applied to bruises and sprains to ease discomfort or applied to the forehead to help relieve symptoms of migraines.

The rhizome of the plant is aromatic, contains essential oil and used for a variety of purposes. The characteristic pungent smell of the rhizome is due to the presence of essential oil rich in camphor and starch.

The rhizome is traditionally used in the treatment of hemorrhoids, leprosy, asthma, cancer, fever, wounds, vomiting, menstrual disorder, anthelmentic, aphrodisiac, gonorrheal discharges and inflammation. Furthermore, the smooth muscle relaxant, anti-tumour and anti-oxidant properties of Curcuma Caesia rhizome extract had been reported.

PHYTO-CONSTITUENTS
Dried rhizomes of Curcuma caesia are reported to contain 1.6% essential oil containing 76.6% d-camphor; 8.2% camphene and bornylene; and 10.5% sesquiterpenes, curcumine, ionone, and turmerone.

Plant height: 14 – 29 inches

Plant spread: 5 – 9 inches

Common name(s): Kali haldi, Krishna kedar, Black Turmeric

Flower colours: White

Max reachable height: 1.5 to 3 feet

Difficulty to grow: Easy to grow

Special features: Foliage & Rhizome

CLIMATE
Curcuma Caesia usually grows in moist deciduous regions. The best season to plant turmeric is spring or summer. It requires warm and humid climate to grow. Keep the turmeric plant in partial sun in the warmer zones. Turmeric prefers warm direct or indirect sun.

SOIL
Rich organic soil that is moist and well-drained. It is grown on different types of soils from light black, ashy loam and red soils clay loam. However, it grows best in a well-drained sandy or clay loam. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season from spring to fall and feeding with a liquid fertilizer in growing season is ideal.

CARING FOR BLACK TURMERIC
Choose a large pot as this herb can easily exceed the height and spread.
Place it about 2 inches (5 cm) below the soil surface, with the buds facing up.
Water the land thoroughly, avoid overwatering.
The crop is to be mulched immediately after planting with green leaves at the rate of 12-15 tonnes per hectare
It may be repeated for a second time after 50 days with the same quantity of green leaves after weeding and application of fertilizers or plastic mulching sheet could be useful.
Pruning is not necessary, taking dried leaves off will be sufficient.
NURSERY TECHNIQUE
Raising propagules: Rhizome pieces are directly planted in the field and no nursery stock is generally raised.

Propagule rate and pretreatment: Approximately, 1000 Kg of rhizomes shall be required per acre for planting at spacing of 30 cm × 30 cm. No particular treatment is given to the propagules before planting.

PREPARATION OF LAND
The land is ploughed, harrowed, mixed with Vermicompost, Neem Cake, Trichoderma and Gypsum @ 10 tonnes per acre together. If required, lime @ 2 tonnes per hectare may be applied to reduce excessive acidity in soils, at least one month before planting.

TRANSPLANTING AND OPTIMUM SPACING
Middle of April is the best time for raising the crop in North-East India, while in other regions, it is the pre-monsoon period. The crop is propagated vegetatively through rhizomes. The whole or parts of rhizome, weighing approximately 20 g, should be planted in rows directly in the field during April. Planting at a spacing of 30 cm × 30 cm is found optimum, for which 4500 propagules (rhizome segments) are required acre. The rhizomes sprout in about 15–20 days.

INTERCROPPING SYSTEM
Kali haldi is grown as a single crop. But, it may be intercropped beneath widely interrupted canopy trees, like Amla, Mango etc.

INTERCULTURE AND MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
Irrigation practices: The crop is usually grown under rain-fed conditions in high rainfall tracts of Assam and Kerala states. Constant humidity is to be maintained in other areas through regular irrigation. Sprinkler irrigation is the most suitable method.
Disease and pest control: Leaf spot (Tephrina sp., Coletotrichum sp.) and leaf blotch (Corticium sp.) are sometimes observed on the crop. They can be controlled by spraying of liquid organic booster at a week intervals.
HARVEST MANAGEMENT
Crop maturity and harvesting: The crop takes about nine months to mature. Harvesting is done in mid-January. Before digging the rhizomes, soil is moistened through irrigation, so that the rhizomes are not injured. Injury to the rhizomes may cause decay of the harvest.
Post-harvest management: Peeled, half cut or sliced rhizomes should be kept in oven at 55 °C or under well-ventilated shade for drying. These dried rhizomes should be stored in suitable damp-proof containers.
Chemical constituents : Dried rhizomes of Curcuma caesia are reported to contain 1.6% essential oil containing 76.6% d-camphor; 8.2% camphene and bornylene; and 10.5% sesquiterpenes, curcumine, ionone, and turmerone.
Yield: Estimated yield of fresh rhizomes is 19-21 tonnes per acre while dry rhizome yield is about 3.5 to 5 tonnes per acre.
