DOs and DONTs of HDB Corridor Gardening

๐ŸŒฟ☘️๐ŸŒพWEEKEND GARDENING WITH JAMES ๐ŸŒฟ☘️๐ŸŒพ
Chapter 2 – DOs and DONTs of HDB Corridor Gardening

Before we dive into the aspects of skyrise gardening, what can we do or cannot do / need to consider / be aware for skyrise balcony / corridor spaces' use?

The official reference for HDB dwellers is in the link below :

Some HDB building layouts are identical especially those within the same housing estate, built around the same time.

But between a 3BR vs 4BR vs 5BR and so on, there are differences in how common corridors are shared. Distinctly for 3BR and / or 4BR flats, corridors are linear; 5BR units tended to be 4 units per landing layouts.

Different unit location gives rise to its unique potentials for planting, but they are Public area – a Common Corridor ie “should follow guidelines”, so “Stay within your own area” and “ensure daily cleanliness and maintenance”, against “inviting unnecessary attention”.

It is Town Council contractor’s responsibility to sweep the corridor, but if there are things in the way causing inconvenience to their work, they “may reject the work when extensive effort is required” eg reaching into nooks and crannies.

There were past experiences of having strangers / “neighbours” coming to “admire” when the result of their “admiring” is “missing plants” when nobody is watching.

"Missing plants" or "Missing plant parts" to be precise. Ranging from an obvious entire plant with pot getting stolen, leaving an obvious gap; or one amongst a cluster / group was lifted off, otherwise it was a branch, or flower cluster or fruit plucked.

There were occasions also that amongst a group of plants in the same pot, some goes missing, with soil littered on the ground and surrounding area.

These days I have a CCTV along corridor ceiling.

Another "DO NOT" which is not so direct especially to the owner / plant lover is their "Excessive Indulgence". One even modified their corridor, whilst the other ones probably created the issues subconsciously over time.

Here's an online post which covers several aspects of HDB corridor gardening which you might be interested in:

Next week, we would look at various ancillary plant supports which can be adapted to HDB / Skyrise corridor gardening.
