Overview

One of the 276 Thevara Paadal petra sthalams.Around 14 kilometres South East of Mannargudi and 14 kilometres North West of Thiruthuraipoondi; close to the main road. Temple is reverentially said by Saint Tirugnana Sambandar in his Thevaram psalms. This is the 111st Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery lauded in Thevaram psalms. Vaikasi Visakam Brahmmotsavam (My-June), Aadipooram (July-August), Navarathri (September-October), Karthikai (November-December) are the celebrations celebrated in the temple. The Pradoshakala Murthy (time between 4.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. is seen as Pradosha kala as indicated by Hindu chronological registry) is in a different holy place as a symbol. About the Temple

The three tier Rajagopuram – main tower – faces west. There are two inner corridors, Prakara. Legend/Story

Artist of the divine world Ramba was reviled to go to Earth for a few wrongs she conferred. தல வரலாறு:

விருத்திராசுரன் என்ற அரக்கன் தேவர்களை மிகவும் துன்புறுத்தி வந்தான். இந்திரன் அவனை வெல்வதற்கான வழியைக் கூறும்படி பிரம்மாவிடம் வேண்டினான். ததீசி என்ற முனிவரின் முதுகெலும்பை பெற்று அதை வஜ்ராயுதமாக்கி அதன் மூலம் மட்டுமே அரக்கனை கொல்லமுடியும் என்று பிரம்மா இந்திரனிடம் கூறினார். இந்திரனும் அதன்படி முனிவரைக் கொன்று அவரது முதுகெலும்பை வஜ்ராயுதமாக்கி விருத்திராசுரனனைக் கொன்றான். முனிவரை கொன்று முதுகெலும்பை பெற்றதால், இந்திரனுக்கு பிரம்மஹத்தி தோஷம் ஏற்பட்டது. இந்த தோஷத்தை போக்கிக் கொள்ள தேவகுருவான பிரகஸ்பதியை நாடினான். அவரின் ஆலோசனைப்படி இந்திரன் பூவுலகம் வந்து வன்னிமரத்தின் அடியில் இத்தலத்தில் இருக்கும் சிவலிங்கத்தை ஒரு தீர்த்தம் உண்டாக்கி அதனால் அபிஷேகம் செய்து வழிபட்டான். சிவபெருமான் அருளால் பிரம்மஹத்தி தோஷமும் நீங்கப் பெற்றான். இந்திரன் பூஜித்ததால் இத்தலம் இந்திரபுரம் என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்டது. இந்திரனின் வாகனமான ஐராவதம் என்ற யானையும் இத்தல இறைவனை வழிபட்டது. தனது தந்தத்தால் பூமியில் கோடு கிழித்ததால் இத்தலம் கோட்டூர் எனப் பெயர் பெற்றது. இந்திரன் பூஜித்து பிரம்மஹத்தி தோஷம் நீங்கப் பெற்றதால், இத்தலத்தில் நீராடி இறைவனை வழிபடுபவர்களின் பிரம்மஹத்தி முதலான சகல தோஷங்களும் நீங்கும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை.

கோட்டூர் இரண்டு பகுதிகளாக மேலக்கோட்டூர் என்றும், கீழக்கோட்டூர் என்றும் உள்ளது. மேலக்கோட்டூரிலுள்ள கோவிலே பாடல் பெற்ற சிவஸ்தலம். கோவிலுக்கு முதல் கட்டமாக ஒரு துழைவாயிலும், அதையடுத்து மேற்கு நோக்கிய மூன்று நிலை ராஜகோபுரமும் உள்ளது. இரண்டு பிரகாரத்துடன் விளங்கும் இக்கோவிலில் முதல் வாயில் வழியாக உள்ளே புழைந்ததும் கவசமிட்ட கொடி மரமும், பலிபீடமும் நந்தியும் உள்ளன. உள்பிரகாரத்தில் மூலவர் சுயம்பு மூர்த்தியாக அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். கருவறை கோஷ்ட தெய்வங்களாக நர்த்தன கணபதி, தட்சிணாமூர்த்தி, லிங்கோத்பவர், பிரம்மா, துர்க்கை உள்ளனர். சண்டேசுவரர் சந்நிதி உள்ளது. அம்பிகை தேனாம்பாள் சந்நிதி கிழக்கு நோக்கி அமைந்துள்ளது. நின்ற திருக்கோலத்தில் அம்பிகை காட்சி தருகிறாள். மாசி மகத்தன்று இத்தல இறைவனுக்கு பால் அபிஷேகம் செய்தால், லிங்கத்தில் அர்த்தநாரீஸ்வர வடிவம் தெரிவதை பார்க்கலாம் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.

தலத்தின் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அம்சமாக உள்ளது இங்குள்ள ரம்பையின் உருவம். ஒரு சமயம் தேவலோகத்தில் இந்திரனின் சபையில் நடனம் ஆடிய பிறகு களைப்பால் பூஞ்சோலையில் ரம்பை ஆடை விலகியது கூட அறியாமல் படுத்து உறங்க, அவ்வழி வந்த நாரதர் ரம்பையின் நிலைகண்டு கோபித்து அவளை பூவுலகில் பிறக்கும்படி சபித்தார். நாரதர் சாபத்திலிருந்து விடுபட, அவரின் அறிவுரைப்படி ரம்பை இத்தலத்தில் ஈசனை நோக்கி இடது கால் ஊன்றி, வலது கால் மடித்து, உள்ளங்காலில் இடது கையை வைத்து, வலது கையை தலைமேல் வைத்தபடி அக்னியில் நின்று தவம் செய்தாள். ரம்பைக்கு தரிசனம் தந்த இறைவன் வரங்கள் பல தந்து மறைந்தார். அவள் முன்பை விடவும் அதிக ஈடுபாட்டுடன் சிவனை அனுதினமும் பூஜித்து வந்தாள். தவம் செய்த அமைப்புடன் காணும் ரம்பையின் உருவச்சிலை காணவேண்டிய ஒன்று. உமாமகேஸ்வரர், அற்புதமான அர்த்தநாரீசுவரர் ஆகியோரும் தரிசிக்க வேண்டிவர்கள்.. இக்கோயிலினுள் உள்ள அமுதக் கிணற்றோடு முள்ளியாறு, சிவகங்கை தீர்த்தம், பிரம்ம தீர்த்தம், இந்திர தீர்த்தம், சிவ தீர்த்தம், விஸ்வகர்ம தீர்த்தம், ரம்பை தீர்த்தம் மற்றும் மண்டை தீர்த்தம் என ஒன்பது தீர்த்தங்கள் இத்தல தீர்த்தங்களாக உள்ளன. தல விருட்சமாக வன்னி மரம் திகழ்கிறது.. திருஞானசம்பந்தர் இத்தலத்து இறைவன் மேல் பாடியருளியுள்ள இப்பதிகம் 2-ம் திருமுறையில் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது. தனது பதிகத்தின் ஒவ்வொரு பாடலிலும் இத்தல இறைவனை "கோட்டூர் நற்கொழுந்தே" என்று போற்றுகின்றார். கோட்டூர் கொழுந்தீசரை வணங்குபவர்கள் தேவருலகில் தேவரோடும் இனிந்திருப்பார்கள், அழியாத செல்வமுடையவராய் இவ்வுலகில் புகழோடு வாழ்வார்கள், அடியவர்களின் வினைகள் நீங்கி இறைவன் திருவருளைப் பெறுவார்கள், வழிபடுவர்களுக்கு இடரும், கேடும் ஏதும் இல்லாமல் உலகெலாம் புகழுடன் விளங்குவர் என்று பதிகத்தில் குறிப்பிடுகின்றார். மேலும் தனது பதிகத்தில் கோட்டூரைப் பற்றி குறிப்பிடும் போது (7-வது பாடல்) இத்தலம் மாடமாளிகை, கூடகோபுரம், மணிஅரங்கம், அழகியசாலை, புகழ்தற்குரிய மதில், பொன் மண்டபம் ஆகியவற்றோடு அழகிய பொழில்கள் சூழ்ந்த கோட்டூர் என்று கூறுகிறார்.

சிறப்புக்கள் :

இவ்வூருக்குக் கிழக்கே ஒரு சிவன் கோவில் தனியாக உள்ளது. இஃது, கீழ்க்கோட்டூர் மணியம்பலமாகும். இது, கருவூர்த்தேவர் திருவிசைப்பாப் பெற்றத்தலமாகும்.

ரம்பைக்கு தரிசனம் தந்த இறைவன் வரங்கள் பல தந்து மறைந்தார்.

இந்திரனின் வாகனமான ஐராவதம் என்ற யானையும் இத்தல இறைவனை வழிபட்டது. தனது தந்தத்தால் பூமியில் கோடு கிழித்ததால் இத்தலம் கோட்டூர் எனப் பெயர் பெற்றது.

அமைவிடம் மாநிலம் :

தமிழ் நாடு மன்னார்குடியில் இருந்து தென்கிழக்கே திருத்துறைப்பூண்டி செல்லும் சாலையில் 16 கி.மி. தொலைவில் இத்தலம் இருக்கிறது. மன்னார்குடி, திருத்துறைப்பூண்டி ஆகிய இடங்களில் இருந்து பேருந்து வசதி உள்ளது. இத்தலத்திற்குப் பக்கத்தில் திருக்களர், திருவெண்டுறை ஆகிய பாடல் பெற்ற திருமுறைத் தலங்கள் உள்ளன.

இவ்வாலயம் தினந்தோறும் காலை 6 மணி முதல் 11-30 மணி வரையிலும், மாலை 5 மணி முதல் இரவு 7-30 மணி வரையிலும் திறந்திருக்கும்.
