Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia)

Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia)-

this tendril bearing vine of Cucumber family is native to Africa. It produces small yellow 5 petalled flowers which grow into warty oblong shaped pendulous bitter fruits. Hence the common name bitter gourd. These gourds have a central cavity filled with seeds and pith. The fruits are most often eaten green, before they turn yellow. These plants have characteristic dark green leaves with serrated edges. Hence the Genus name "Momordica". Latin word "Mordeo" meaning to bite (leaves appear bitten). Bitter Gourds contain a protein 'Poly-petptide P' which is an insulin analogue. Hence it is considered good for diabetics. The fruit's bitterness is a bit reduced when cooked. Hence usually eaten as curries or as stuffed vegetable. Bitter Gourds are propagated by seeds.
