INCREASING THE ABILITY OF THE DRUG AND REDUCING ITS QUANTITY TO ACT IN GOOD MANNER - 

अल्पस्यापि महार्थत्वं प्रभूतस्याल्पकर्मताम्||४८|| 

कुर्यात् संयोगविश्लेषकालसंस्कारयुक्तिभिः|४९|

Even the DRAVYA in small amounts can do wonderful actions and the DRAVYA in large amounts may not be able to work based on the addition of DRAVYAS or elimination of DRAVYAS, based on the timing of giving the AUSHADHA, and the planning and YOJANAA based on which the AUSHADHA is being used. 

COMMENTRY – it is the description of the similar and opposite potency DRAVYA combinations. The DRAVYAS having similar VIRYA act in a strong way but the VIRUDHA VIRYA combinations work weak even if they are in large amounts. 

So if some fast acting drugs are made slow acting drugs, this is only to save the AGNI and to save the KOSHTHA from any of their untoward effects.

The potency of the drug can also be enhanced by the elimination of some DRAVYAS, this is in context of the elimination of the VIRUDHA VIRYA DRAVYAS, if SAMAAN VIRYA DRAVYAS are eliminated, potency of the drug decreases.

And by SANSKAARA also there can be increases or decrease in the GUNAS of the drug based on the SAMAAN or VIRUDHA VIRYS DRAVYAS.

ALPASYA MAHARTHATVAMA means like SHODHANA AUSHADHA in small amount can result in BAHU DOSHA SHODHANA if used in the properly SNIGDHA patient and vice a versa.
